Fans of midsize pickup trucks have been waiting a while for Nissan to introduce its third-generation Frontier, but that wait is finally over. The 2022 Nissan Frontier arrives at Ancira Nissan with a new muscular styling, payload and tow capacities to match and many new standard and optional features. Often, when we compare the Frontier to a Ford, we compare it to the Ranger. But Ford has introduced an even smaller truck—the 2022 Ford Maverick—and asserts that it will be an even better option for urban drivers. Let’s compare the 2022 Nissan Frontier vs 2022 Ford Maverick and find out.
The 2022 Nissan Frontier measures 210.2 inches in overall length, and that is about 17.5 feet. Ford’s marketing suggests that the 2022 Ford Maverick is more agile in urban environments, but it measures 199.7 inches in overall length. That puts it at about 16.6 feet, which is not a huge difference. Sure, maybe it matters in some specific parking scenarios, but it also comes with some drawbacks that we think we would affect us more often than some tight parking spots. Something else worth mentioning is that the Maverick is only available in a single configuration: a four-door cab with a 4.5-foot bed. Nissan gives you an option. You can either opt for the two-door king cab paired with a 6-foot bed or the larger four-door crew cab, which is paired with a bed that is larger than the Maverick bed and almost 5 feet.
It is worth noting that we did not have the final interior specs for the 2022 Nissan Frontier at the time of this writing. We do have the Maverick specs and know that front legroom is about the same in both cases. We also know that the Maverick provides about 36 inches of rear legroom, which is not bad. The outgoing Frontier model has less than that, but we also know that this was a focal point for Nissan. Our presumption is that the small Frontier cab will be close to that number and that the larger cab will be greater than that number and thus the best option for the driver who wants to prioritize rear legroom.
Prior to the 2020 model year, Nissan had already been working on its new platform, and it went ahead and put the new powertrain into that model in advance of the next generation. This powertrain features a 3.8L V6 engine—310 hp and 281 lb.-ft. of torque—paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and part-time four-wheel drive is optional. The maximum towing capacity has been improved, however, and is impressive a 6,720 pounds. Ford will offer two powertrains at its dealership serving San Antonio Boerne New Braunfels Texas. The base is a 2.5L Hybrid—162 hp and 155 lb.-ft—paired with an electronic CVT. You also have the option of a 2.0L EcoBoost—250 hp and 277 lb.-ft.—paired with an eight-speed automatic. Max towing capacity is 2,000 pounds. You can increase that to 4,000 with the optional EcoBoost and 4K tow option.
The Frontier comes standard with an 8-inch color HD touchscreen, a rearview camera system and numerous bells and whistles, including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Standard driver-assistance technologies included forward collision detection and warning. You can opt to add the Safety Shield 360 suite, which adds automatic braking, a blind-spot monitor, lane departure warning and more. Options include a surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control and driver attention monitoring. Ford offers similar standard and optional equipment, but it only includes the basic Sync infotainment system. If you want to the more robust Sync 3, you have to select it as an option. NissanConnect is standard.
