The upcoming 2023 Nissan Z is the latest Nissan interpretation of the two-seat sports coupe, and it is generating a lot of excitement. The first thing that jumps out at fans is the name. Since the first Z model hit American shores in 1969, the Z moniker has had three digits preceding it: 240Z, 300ZX, 350Z and 370Z. Many enthusiasts had guessed that the newest model would be the 400Z, but that was not meant to be. Nissan has dropped the digits altogether for the U.S. market, and the speculation is that they did for more cohesive branding that is much more familiar and approachable to the average consumer. Whatever the reasoning, the choice has added to the excitement, and the team at Ancira Nissan, your local San Antonio Nissan dealership, is thrilled to present you our early 2023 Nissan Z review.
For those not paying attention yet, the new exterior set Nissan enthusiasts abuzz when it was first introduced as a prototype in 2020. The reasons for this are a large gaping front grille and various other design elements that are reminiscent of the aesthetics used in the 70s, 80s and 90s. These visual cues are all hugely popular but were largely abandoned in the aughts and 10s. The wheelbase is 100.4 inches, which is the same as the 370Z but longer than the Supra by more than 3 inches. Despite that, the Z is only 0.1 inches longer than the Supra, which measures 172.5 inches overall—or about 14.4 feet.
While the new vehicle will not arrive at our San Antonio Nissan dealership until Spring 2022, most of the specifications have been released. In addition, numerous automotive journalists have had firsthand experiences, and photos abound. All of those details make this 2023 Nissan Z review a much easier task. The Z is a two-seater. A tight cockpit wraps around both the driver and passenger. Headroom is 38.2 inches. Legroom is 42.9, and both of those measurements put it right in line with its closest competitor: the Toyota Supra. A liftback hatch provides access to a cargo area, and while we do not have a measurement just yet, we do know that the previous model could fit about three carry-on suitcases.
As you would expect, the 2023 Nissan Z is a rear-drive vehicle, and there is no all-wheel drive option. Nissan is offering three trim levels: Sport, Performance and Proto Spec. The Performance trim adds numerous mechanical enhancements to the base model, including a performance exhaust system, bigger brakes and a mechanical limited-slip differential. The Proto Spec model is the same and differentiates itself more with visual enhancements than upgrades under the hood.
A design decision that has really excited fans is a standard six-speed manual transmission. Drivers who prefer automatic will have the option of a sophisticated nine-speed. Whichever transmission you choose, under the hood will be a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 that generates 400 horsepower and 350 pound-feet. For those keeping score, that is a significant increase over the 370Z: 350 hp and 276 lb.-ft. That is also more horses than the base Supra—255 hp—and all premium Supra models: 382 hp.
Nissan set out to create the safest sports car that it has ever developed. The Sport model has an 8.0-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, a rearview camera system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Performance trim adds a 9-inch touchscreen, integrated navigation, in-car Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless Apple CarPlay. Another big change for the Z over past models is the inclusion of driver-assistance tech. The base package adds front automatic braking, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic monitoring, adaptive cruise control and front and rear parking sensors.
