Safety Comparison

Both the GT-R and the S5 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, all-wheel drive, traction control, daytime running lights and rearview cameras.

Warranty Comparison

Nissan’s powertrain warranty covers the GT-R 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Audi covers the S5. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the S5 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are almost 4 times as many Nissan dealers as there are Audi dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the GT-R’s warranty.

Reliability Comparison

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the GT-R has a 150-amp alternator. The S5’s standard 110-amp alternator isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2016 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Nissan vehicles are better in initial quality than Audi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Nissan 10th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 9 more problems per 100 vehicles, Audi is ranked 14th, below the industry average.

Engine Comparison

The GT-R Premium’s standard 3.8 turbo V6 produces 211 more horsepower (565 vs. 354) and 98 lbs.-ft. more torque (467 vs. 369) than the S5’s 3.0 turbo V6. The GT-R NISMO’s standard 3.8 turbo V6 produces 246 more horsepower (600 vs. 354) and 112 lbs.-ft. more torque (481 vs. 369) than the S5’s 3.0 turbo V6.

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

The GT-R has 4.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the S5 (19.5 vs. 15.3 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Tires and Wheels Comparison

For better traction, the GT-R has larger tires than the S5 (F:255/40R20 & R:285/35R20 vs. 245/40R18).

The GT-R’s 285/35R20 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the S5’s standard 40 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the GT-R has standard 20-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the S5. The S5’s largest wheels are only 19-inches.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires standard on the GT-R can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The S5 doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the GT-R is .1 inches wider in the front and 1.3 inches wider in the rear than on the S5.

For better maneuverability, the GT-R’s turning circle is 1.1 feet tighter than the S5’s (36.6 feet vs. 37.7 feet).

Chassis Comparison

The design of the Nissan GT-R amounts to more than styling. The GT-R has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .26 Cd. That is lower than the S5 (.29 to .3). A more efficient exterior helps the GT-R go faster and keeps the interior quieter. It also helps the GT-R get better fuel mileage.

The GT-R uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The S5 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Ergonomics Comparison

The GT-R’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge – which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The S5 does not have an oil pressure gauge.

The GT-R’s standard power windows have a locking feature to keep children from operating them. Audi does not offer a locking feature on the S5’s power windows.
