Safety Comparison

The Maxima Platinum has a standard Around View® Monitor to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The 300 only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

The Maxima Platinum’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The 300 doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Maxima and the 300 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available crash mitigating brakes, blind spot warning systems and rear cross-path warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Nissan Maxima is safer than the Chrysler 300:

A significantly tougher test than their original offset frontal crash test, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety does 40 MPH small overlap frontal offset crash tests. In this test, where only 25% of the total width of the vehicle is struck, results indicate that the Nissan Maxima is safer than the 300:

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, with its optional front crash prevention system, and its available headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Maxima its highest rating: “Top Pick Plus” for 2017, a rating granted to only 46 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The 300 was not even a standard “Top Pick” for 2017.

Warranty Comparison

The Maxima’s 5 year corrosion warranty has no mileage limitations, but the corrosion warranty on the 300 runs out after 100,000 miles.

Reliability Comparison

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the Maxima has an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of the 5.7 V8 in the 300.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2016 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Nissan vehicles are better in initial quality than Chrysler vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Nissan 10th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 14 more problems per 100 vehicles, Chrysler is ranked 19th, below the industry average.

Engine Comparison

The Maxima’s 3.5 DOHC V6 produces 8 more horsepower (300 vs. 292) and 1 lbs.-ft. more torque (261 vs. 260) than the 300’s standard 3.6 DOHC V6.

Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

On the EPA test cycle the Maxima gets better city fuel mileage than the 300 RWD with its standard engine (21 city vs. 19 city).

Brakes and Stopping Comparison

The Maxima’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs standard on the 300 are solid, not vented.

Tires and Wheels Comparison

For better traction, the Maxima has larger tires than the 300 (245/45R18 vs. 225/60R18).

The Maxima’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 300 Limited/300C’s standard 60 series tires. The Maxima 3.5 SR’s tires have a lower 40 series profile than the 300S/300C Platinum’s 45 series tires.

The Maxima has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The 300 doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Maxima offers an optional full size spare tire so your trip isn’t interrupted by a flat. A full size spare isn’t available on the 300, it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The Maxima 3.5 SR handles at .87 G’s, while the 300 Limited pulls only .82 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Maxima 3.5 SR executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the 300 (26.6 seconds vs. 27.2 seconds).

For better maneuverability, the Maxima’s turning circle is .6 feet tighter than the 300’s (38.1 feet vs. 38.7 feet).

Chassis Comparison

The Nissan Maxima may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 500 to 750 pounds less than the Chrysler 300.

The Maxima is 5.8 inches shorter than the 300, making the Maxima easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

To almost totally eliminate engine vibration in the passenger area, the Maxima has a liquid-filled front engine mount. The liquid helps further dampen engine harshness. The 300 uses conventional solid rubber engine mounts.

The Maxima SL/SR/Platinum uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The 300 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space Comparison

The Maxima has .8 inches more front headroom and 3.2 inches more front legroom than the 300.

Cargo Capacity Comparison

A low lift-over trunk design makes loading and unloading the Maxima easier. The Maxima’s trunk lift-over height is 28.8 inches, while the 300’s liftover is 30.1 inches.

With its sedan body style, valet key, locking rear seatbacks and remote trunk release lockout, the Maxima offers cargo security. The 300’s non-lockable folding seat and non-lockable remote release defeat cargo security.

Ergonomics Comparison

The Maxima’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge – which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The 300 does not have an oil pressure gauge.

If the front windows are left down on the Maxima the driver can raise them using the key in the outside lock cylinder. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from outside the vehicle using the key in the outside lock cylinder or the keyless remote. The driver of the 300 can only raise the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

Economic Advantages Comparison

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Maxima is less expensive to operate than the 300 because typical repairs cost much less on the Maxima than the 300, including $307 less for an alternator, $71 less for front brake pads and $921 less for a power steering pump.

Recommendations Comparison

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Maxima first among large cars in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The 300 isn’t in the top three.

The Nissan Maxima outsold the Chrysler 300 by 10% during the 2016 model year.
