Safety Comparison

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the Rogue AWD’s standard Hill Descent Control allows you to creep down safely. The Rav4 doesn’t offer Hill Descent Control.

The Rogue SL has standard NissanConnect, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to help track down your vehicle if it’s stolen or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The Rav4 doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the Rogue and the Rav4 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Nissan Rogue is safer than the Toyota Rav4:

Regenerative brakes improve the Rogue Hybrid’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Rav4 doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Rogue Hybrid’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.) The Rav4 doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

Tires and Wheels Comparison

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Rogue SL offers optional 19-inch wheels. The Rav4’s largest wheels are only 18-inches.

The Rogue has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Rav4 doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires available on the Rogue can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The Rav4 doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

Suspension and Handling Comparison

The Rogue has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Rav4 doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Rogue’s wheelbase is 1.8 inches longer than on the Rav4 (106.5 inches vs. 104.7 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Rogue is 1.2 inches wider in the front and 1.2 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the Rav4.

The Rogue SL AWD handles at .77 G’s, while the Rav4 XLE pulls only .75 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

For greater off-road capability the Rogue has a 2.1 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Rav4 (8.2 vs. 6.1 inches), allowing the Rogue to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Passenger Space Comparison

The Rogue offers optional seating for 7 passengers; the Rav4 can only carry 5.

The Rogue has 24.6 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Rav4 (126.5 vs. 101.9).

The Rogue has 1.8 inches more front headroom, .4 inches more front legroom, .7 inches more rear legroom, 3.2 inches more rear hip room and .5 inches more rear shoulder room than the Rav4.

Ergonomics Comparison

The Rogue SV/SL has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Rav4 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

If the windows are left down on the Rogue the driver can raise them all using the key in the outside lock cylinder; on a hot day the driver can lower the windows. The driver of the Rav4 can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Rogue’s variable intermittent wipers have an adjustable delay to allow the driver to choose a setting that best clears the windshield during light rain or mist. The Rav4 LE’s standard fixed intermittent wipers only have one fixed delay setting, so the driver will have to manually switch them between slow and intermittent.

The Rogue’s power mirror controls are mounted on the door for easy access. The Rav4’s power mirror controls are on the dash, hidden behind the steering wheel, where they are awkward to manipulate.

Both the Rogue and the Rav4 offer rear vents. For greater rear passenger comfort, the Rogue has standard rear air conditioning vents to keep rear occupants cool in summer or warm in winter. The Rav4 doesn’t offer rear air conditioning vents, only heat vents.

Economic Advantages Comparison

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Rogue is less expensive to operate than the Rav4 because typical repairs cost much less on the Rogue than the Rav4, including $273 less for an alternator, $23 less for front brake pads, $91 less for a starter, $48 less for front struts and $715 less for a timing belt/chain.
